Multiple patrol cars hit by U-Haul truck fleeing police


WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man driving a U-Haul truck hit several patrol cars during a pursuit Wednesday, according to the Ocean Isle Beach Police Department.

Marcus W. Soles, of Greenville, faces multiple charges in this case.

According to a Facebook post by OIBPD, officers attempted to stop a U-Haul truck traveling at high speed from the island to the mainland just after 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials say Soles did not stop for blue lights and sirens.

“Soles fled at high speed to Highway 17 and turned south toward South Carolina,” the Facebook post read. “Deputies from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and Sunset Beach Police officers joined the chase and pursued Soles until he was wrecked in the Hickman Road area. During the chase, speeds reached 90 miles per hour and Soles drove through the median knocking over road construction cones and into the northbound lane of Highway 17. Soles slammed into several patrol cars during the pursuit and deputies were able to stop the vehicle after blocking Soles. in.”

Soles was wanted outside of Pitt County for a probation violation.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and the Ocean Isle Beach Police Department charged Soles with:

  • Flee to evade arrest
  • Disregard blue light and siren
  • Reckless driving with gratuitous negligence
  • Criminal assault with a deadly weapon on a government official
  • Simple possession of marijuana
  • Injury to personal property
  • Possession of a stolen vehicle
  • Impaired driving

It was booked under a guaranteed bond of $130,000.
