Memorial Day 2022: Florida gas prices, best times to get out of town

FLORIDA — With Floridians feeling the most relaxed about taking trips in the past two years, Memorial Day Weekend 2022 trips are expected to be twice as busy as the 2021 holidays, according to a news release. AAA.

Gas prices do not deter residents from using a vehicle for out-of-state travel. AAA’s website showed the average gas price in Florida at $4.53 a gallon on Wednesday. By Memorial Day, prices could be the most expensive yet, said AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins.

About 2.2 million Floridians will travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday weekend, an increase of 8% from 2021, the AAA’s website said.

“Coming out of this two-year pandemic, Floridians are eager to travel again, and it doesn’t look like record gas prices or other inflationary pressures will stop them,” Jenkins said. “Many may consider cost-cutting measures to offset the extra expenses, such as traveling shorter distances, staying at a cheaper hotel, or spending less on shopping, dining and entertainment.”
