honda: Upcoming car/SUV launches in May: From Honda City Hybrid to Jeep Meridian

In just over three months, the Indian automotive industry has already seen notable launches in various segments. However, there is definitely no slowing down. The next few days promise to be busy for automakers with a list of expected launches in India.
Mercedes, Jeep, Honda, Hyundai and Kia will soon launch new vehicles in the Indian market. Here is a list of all the upcoming SUVs and cars that are expected to go on sale in the Indian market soon. We’ll take a look.
Jeep Meridian
Jeep India recently unveiled the seven-seater Meridian SUV in the Indian market and pre-bookings for the SUV will start on May 3, 2022.
The Jeep Meridian SUV is essentially the stretched version of the Compass and will be offered with 4×2 and 4×4 drive configurations.

Speaking of design, the Meridian’s silhouette is similar to that of the Compass but with a slightly more upright stance. The SUV is equipped with LED headlights with integrated DRLs similar to Compass, a seven-slat grille, a muscular front bumper with a large air intake, LED fog lights, side cladding with turn signals and newly designed alloy wheels. Meridian’s rear profile is inspired by larger Jeeps, including the Grand Wagoneer and Grand Cherokee.
Similar to the Compass, the Jeep Meridian will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that develops 172 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 2-speed automatic. 9 speeds.
The Jeep Meridian is expected to cost between Rs 19 lakh to 33 lakh. When launched, the Jeep Meridian competed with Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, Isuzu MU-X, Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tiguan, Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV 700.
Honda City hybrid
The next car on the list is the Honda City e:HEV. The car was unveiled on April 14, 2022 and is expected to launch in May 2022.

Speaking of the exterior, the car is similar to its ICE counterpart except for e:HEV badging, new fog lamp trim and a rear diffuser differentiating the vehicle from standard models. Interiors continue to feature a two-tone scheme.
The Honda City e:HEV is the first to bring self-charging hybrid technology to the midsize sedan segment in India. The Honda City Hybrid will be powered by two electric motors that work in tandem with a 1.5-liter i-VTEC DOHC gasoline engine.
The naturally aspirated Atkinson four-cylinder engine is capable of producing 98 hp of power and 127 Nm of torque. In combination with the twin electric motors, the car produces a combined power of 126 hp and a torque of 253 Nm. The hybrid setup is paired with an eCVT automatic transmission. Honda claims the City hybrid will return an average fuel efficiency of 26.5 kmpl.
Honda started production of the Honda City Hybrid. He has already taken the first unit off the assembly lines of the Japanese manufacturer’s factory in Tapukara, located in Rajasthan.
Honda City e:HEV price in India is expected to be around Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom). Honda City Hybrid will have no direct competition. However, in the midsize sedan segment, it will compete with Skoda Slavia, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and the upcoming Volkswagen Virtus.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Mercedes-Benz India recently announced that the new C-Class will be launched in India on May 10, 2022. The brand has started reservations for its all-new C-Class exclusively for Mercedes-Benz customers from April 13 to 30, 2022. Reservations for the remaining customers will open from May 1, 2022 with a reservation amount set at Rs 50,000. The car will be offered in three variants namely C200, C220d and C300d.

India’s new Mercedes-Benz C-Class will likely come in three engine options – a C200 with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine developing 197 hp, a C220d with a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 194 horsepower. hp and a C300d with the same 2.0-liter diesel engine lightly tuned to produce 245 hp. A 9-speed automatic transmission will be offered as standard on all powertrains.
The price of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz C-Class is expected to start from Rs 53 lakh. When launched, it competed with Jaguar XF, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Lexus ES.
Kia EV6
The all-electric Kia EV6 was unveiled globally in March 2021 and after a year, Kia is launching its first electric car in India on May 26, 2022. Built on the E-GMP EV platform, the EV6 will come to India as a CBU unit and will be limited to only 100 units.

Kia India has yet to reveal the powertrain options for India’s upcoming EV6, however, we expect it to use a 58kWh battery available in two configurations – rear-wheel drive with a single motor producing 170hp of power and an all-wheel drive with a double electric motor generating a power of 235 hp. The other option is a 77.4 kWh battery mated to a single motor, producing a combined 229 hp in rear-wheel-drive form. In all-wheel drive, the battery and twin motors produce 325 hp.
There’s also a performance-focused GT variant with two electric motors that produces 585bhp of power and a whopping 740Nm of torque.
In the United States, the price of the Kia EV6 starts from $40,900 (approximately Rs 31.37,377 at current exchange rates) With its import to India, we expect the price of the EV6 to start from Rs 62 lakh (ex-showroom).
Hyundai Tucson
Hyundai is likely to launch the new Hyundai Tucson in India sometime in 2022 for the Indian market.
The new Tucson’s 2.0-liter diesel engine and 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Tucson will get a new grille with LED daytime running lights, 19-inch alloy wheels, new headlights and more. Speaking of the new Tucson interior, it will sport a larger touchscreen infotainment screen than the current model. As expected, the system will come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
We are also expecting Tier 1 self-driving technology in the car, given that it is available in international markets and gaining popularity in India now.
