An Australian road trip has never been more expensive, with car rental prices rising in all capitals as some companies sell off vehicles.

The most exorbitant cost of a rental car over the Easter holiday was from Hobart airport, where a Europcar vehicle cost $1,682 for the weekend.

That’s more than double what it would normally cost for the same number of days in July, which would cost you $787.

The comparison website Finder calculated the numbers for A topical matter, revealing the price to rent a car for the long weekend versus a weekend in July.

“The prices we’re seeing now are really out of this world,” said Finder’s Taylor Blackburn.

Brisbane and Adelaide were sold without cars over the Easter holidays.

There are several reasons for the rising prices, including the lack of fleet to increase the number of cars in each company.

“During the pandemic many fleets have been reduced, cars have been sold and it has been harder to replace them, and that effect is still being felt,” Mr Blackburn said.

Avis Budget Group spokesperson sent A topical matter a statement on rising car rental prices across the country.

“With Australia reopening and the school holiday period, we have seen strong demand for car hire in our nationwide fleet as Australians get out on the road again,” he said. declared.

“We are doing everything in our power to meet this demand and provide high quality vehicles to our customers.

“School holidays and long weekends have always been peak times for car rentals, so we encourage customers to book in advance when planning holidays during these times to avoid disappointment or disruption to their vacation plans.

Hertz Vice Chairman Eoin Macneill said several factors are influencing car shortages and prices.

“As an industry, we are currently seeing a shortage of rental cars due to an accumulation of factors including school holidays, reopening of borders and recent flooding in New South Wales and Queensland,” Mr. Macneill said.

“This is further compounded by slower than normal new vehicle manufacturing and delivery rates.”

A Europcar spokesperson said A topical matter in a statement that “market conditions have changed dramatically over the past 18 months or so, post-COVID-19.

“Many factors, ranging from access to personnel to difficulties in sourcing vehicles – due to the current semiconductor crisis and resulting fleet shortage – are weighing on costs for the rental industry. as a whole,” he said.

Mr Beattie thinks the cost of renting a car will come down as supply meets demand, but that may not be until after Christmas and into next year.

“Prices are expected to remain somewhat elevated for the remainder of this calendar year,” he said.

“But hopefully in 2023 we start to see those prices come down again.”
